BOROUGH OF BERGENFIELD WELCOMES MOVING WALL, A MEMORIAL FOR VIETNAM VETERANS

Bergenfield, NJ - The Borough of Bergenfield proudly welcomed the Moving Wall, a scale-sized replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall, on September 1st, 2023. The Moving Wall traveled across the state, accompanied by an escort from the Warrior's Watch, before arriving at Bergenfield High School. Volunteers and members of the Bergenfield Department of Public Works diligently assembled the wall at Bergenfield High School.

Stretching an impressive 375 feet in length and standing 7.5 feet tall, the Moving Wall provides a powerful and moving experience for visitors. As they walk towards its apex, they witness the Wall rising above them, creating an overwhelming sense of reverence and remembrance.

To honor the sacrifices made by the brave service members, a private viewing of the Moving Wall was held on the first night for residents of the Paramus Veterans Home. Council President and Veteran Affairs liaison, Marc Pascual, expressed heartfelt gratitude, stating, "We owe a debt of gratitude to the service members on that wall, they gave the ultimate sacrifice. To all of the veterans, I thank you for your service."

Throughout the weekend, the Moving Wall drew numerous visitors who came to pay their respects and reflect on the names inscribed upon it. This significant event was accompanied by a dedication ceremony of the athletic field behind Roy Brown Middle School to Floyd Thompson, a Bergenfield resident and Vietnam veteran. Mr. Thompson, the longest-serving prisoner of war during the Vietnam War, is a testament to the resilience and bravery of our nation's veterans. This dedication marks the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.

Mayor Arvin Amatorio remarked, "We honor and thank the Vietnam fallen soldiers, the veterans, and their families for the sacrifices they've made to keep us free. To all the Vietnam Veterans, thank you for your service and welcome home." This event, sponsored by the Mayor and Council, Superintendent of Bergenfield Public Schools Dr. Christopher Tully, the Bergenfield Veterans Advisory Committee, and VFW Post 6467, signifies the unity and support within the community for our veterans.

The Borough of Bergenfield extends its deepest gratitude to the individuals and organizations involved in organizing and sponsoring this significant event. Through the Moving Wall and the dedication of the athletic field to Floyd Thompson, we ensure that the sacrifices made by our Vietnam Veterans are never forgotten.
