Passing of Former Councilwoman Dolores Butler

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dolores Butler, former Bergenfield Councilwoman and current Rent Leveling Board Member. Dolores was a dedicated public servant who tirelessly worked for the betterment of our community. Her contributions and commitment to Bergenfield will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Obituary: Dolores Butler (née Andrea)

Dolores Butler, born Dolores Andrea on October 7, 1936, in Jersey City, peacefully passed away on July 21, 2024. She was the cherished mother of Gregory P. Butler and his wife Wendy Pontrelli, and James C. Butler and his wife Maria. Dolores was a loving grandmother to Brittany and Matthew Butler, step grandmother to Kaitlyn and John Jay, and great grandmother to Carmine and also a dear aunt to Jay, Bill, and Ruth Butler. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, George F. Butler.

Dolores led a life dedicated to public service and community. She began her notable career as a Bergenfield Councilwoman in the 1970s spanning three decades. Her leadership and commitment were exemplified by multiple terms as Bergenfield Council President, a distinction honored by the New Jersey State League of Municipalities. Dolores was recognized for her contributions by the Bergen County Democratic Organization and served on various boards including the Special Improvement District, Zoning Board of Adjustment, and Rent Leveling Board. She also served with distinction as a Bergen County Elections Commissioner, Bergenfield Democratic Committee Woman, and Bergenfield Municipal Alliance Liaison. Dolores was actively involved in community service as a member of the Rotary Club and Italian American Club and a lifetime member of the New Jersey Education Association.

Dolores also worked full-time at the Tenafly Board of Education while raising her two sons with love and devotion.

The loss of Dolores Butler, a dedicated public servant and loving mother, leaves a profound void in both her community and her family's hearts. Her unwavering commitment to service and the warmth of her maternal love will be deeply missed by all who were touched by her life.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 3-8 PM at Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 So. Washington Ave., Bergenfield. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church, 29 No. Washington Ave., Bergenfield. Family and friends will gather at 9:45 AM, with the mass beginning at 10 AM. Entombment will follow the funeral mass at St. Joseph Cemetery in Hackensack.

Dolores Butler's legacy and profound impact on her community will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
