Single-Use Carryout Bag and Styrofoam Food Containers Ban to Go Into Effect May 4

BERGENFIELD, NJ – On May 4, 2022, the statewide ban on single-use carryout bags and polystyrene foam will take effect, having an impact on business owners as well as consumers. The new law will prohibit stores and restaurants from providing these single-use items in an effort to help the environment and cut down on waste.

“In the coming days, businesses in Bergenfield and throughout the state will no longer be able to distribute these single-use items that we have gotten used to. As this state ban will impact residents as well as our business owners, it is our goal to educate the public to make this process go smoothly for all of us,” said Mayor Amatorio. “I am asking that the businesses in our community begin making plans for this adjustment soon to limit any possible disruption to your business.”

Additionally, grocery stores larger than 2,500 square feet will not be allowed to provide or sell single-use paper carryout bags. These stores will only be permitted to sell reusable bags to their customers.

Bergenfield to Receive Over a Million Dollars for Hickory Ave. Repaving Project

BERGENFIELD, NJ – The Borough of Bergenfield is set to receive $1,021,608 from the New Jersey Department of Transportation to fund the Hickory Ave. improvement project. The grant money from the state will cover the cost of most of the work without the Borough needing to bond/budget to pay for the project.

“I am thrilled to report that we have gotten confirmation that Bergenfield will be getting over a million dollars back from the state in grant money to fund this critical infrastructure project,” said Mayor Amatorio. “I would like to thank Governor Murphy and our state legislators including Senator Lagana, Assemblyman Tully, and Assemblywoman Swain for working with us to make this a reality. We are constantly looking for creative ways to fund projects in the Borough without having to use taxpayer money.”

Grant writing firm Millenium Strategies submitted the proposal on behalf of the Borough. Millennium has been a partner of Bergenfield for years, assisting the Borough in receiving millions of dollars in funding for projects.

Work on Hickory Ave. will begin in 2022 and more information will be provided to the community at a future date.
