Bergenfield High School Students hold Mock Council Meeting with Assistance from Mayor Amatorio, the Borough Council and the Bergenfield Elks

BERGENFIELD, NJ -- In celebration of National Youth Week, Mayor Amatorio and the Borough Council hosted a mock council meeting in the council chambers. The Bergenfield Elks worked with Bergenfield High School students so that they could learn more about local government.

“This yearly tradition of having Bergenfield High School students come to our council chambers to learn more about how local government works is a tremendous learning opportunity for the students,” said Mayor Amatorio. “The Council and I love meeting the students and watching them run a mock meeting every year. This is only possible  thanks to the help of the Bergenfield Elks and our Municipal Clerk Marie Quinones.”

The students were assigned to the roles of Mayor, Councilmember, or Clerk and they had the opportunity to sit on the dais and run a public meeting. This year, the Mayor was Aiden Boyce, and Axel Chavez and Justin DeJesus served as Councilmembers.

Bergenfield Municipal Clerk Marie Quinones served as their Clerk preparing the agenda and calling the roll when requested by Mr. Boyce. They approved items such as testing at Memorial Park and a vaccination clinic at Conlon Hall. This program has been running for several years and BHS students have always done an incredible job filling the role as Mayor and Council.

Cub Scout Pack 95 Bags 155 Pounds of Garbage during Litter Cleanup

BERGENFIELD, NJ -- Cub Scout Pack 95 is continuing to do an outstanding job helping to keep our community clean and free of litter, while also helping to raise awareness about the dangers of littering.

Last month, Pack 95 picked up 155 pounds of garbage in four hours during a litter cleanup of the Green Acres area adjacent to Vivyen Field, around Twin Boro Park, and around the Bergenfield dog park. The Cub Scouts earned Messenger of Peace awards for their excellent community service.

Together they picked up cups, cans, glass and plastic bottles, clothes, shoes, plastic bags, fishing rod, gloves, masks, large plastic computer chair mats, toys, ropes, scraps of metal, plastic pipes, 5-gallon buckets, medication bottles and many pet waste bags.

When asked about their experience, Jasmine Paes, (2nd grader at Franklin School) said, “I felt happy saving the wildlife. We collected 10 big garbage bags of trash!”

In addition, Isaiah Boodhoo (1st grader and former Bergenfield resident) stated, “I felt sad for the animals in the forest because people’s trash can harm them.”

James Paes (Kindergartener at Franklin School) concluded that it was the best and most exciting award he has ever earned.

To continue doing their part to help sustain the environment, Pack 95 also visited the Bergenfield Recycling Center last week. They were given a tour with an opportunity to ask questions and learn about Bergenfield’s current recycling program. Any groups that are interested in scheduling a short, educational tour of the Bergenfield Recycling Center are encouraged to contact the DPW Office Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm by phone at 201-387-4055 option 3 or by email at This email address is being protected from spambots.
