Bergenfield Public Library Receives Literacy Innovation Award for ESL Program

BERGENFIELD, NJ -- The ESL Program of the Bergenfield Public Library was recently awarded a Literacy Innovation Award by Literacy New Jersey, a statewide nonprofit organization that coordinates a network of volunteers to promote literacy in the Garden State. Bergenfield’s ESL program was recognized for its creativity, flexibility and commitment to service during the pandemic. Tutor Mary Cadillac was highlighted by the program for her unique and uninterrupted work with Maria Salguero Rodriguez, her ESL student since September of 2019.

“The Bergenfield Public Library is a tremendous resource for residents in our community, and I am thrilled to see them once again recognized for their hard work,” said Mayor Amatorio. “Many of our residents have immigrated to the United States, and some are  not able to speak English well. Bergenfield’s Library's ESL Program ensures that they understand the language, which can help them assimilate quicker in our community.”

Bergenfield’s ESL program was founded in 1980, and is the longest-running ESL program in Bergen County. “At the Bergenfield Public Library, we are incredibly proud of our ESL Program and all of our students that have taken part in that program over the years,” said Library Director Allison Ballo. “We have had the opportunity to help numerous residents learn the english language in a creative and supportive environment and I look forward to continuing to do so in the future.”
