Bergenfield Holds Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Newly Renovated Memorial Park Baseball Diamonds

The Borough of Bergenfield has completed the renovations of two baseball diamonds at Memorial Park for recreation baseball and softball. As part of the project, new playing surfaces, bullpens and a new dugout were built at the park. On Wednesday evening, Mayor Arvin Amatorio and the Borough Council joined the Bergenfield Recreation Department and baseball programs to celebrate the completion of the project with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

“Bergenfield remains committed to providing residents with quality parks and recreation opportunities for residents of all ages and the renovations at Memorial Park reaffirm that promise,” said Mayor Arvin Amatorio. “Now, more than ever, it is critical to provide residents with quality and accessible greenspace and we will continue to identify ways to accomplish just that.”

The first diamond is designed for 46/60 and 50/70 baseball and softball that will be used for youth programs. The second diamond is a full 60/90 playing surface commonly used at the teenage, high school, and college level baseball with renovations that include installation of bullpens, on deck areas and new dugouts. Additionally, Bergenfield’s DPW resided the Field House and built new benches for the dugout.

“The renovations at Memorial Park afford the Recreation Department the opportunity to expand and provide additional programs to Bergenfield residents,” said Director Ed Volmer. “We look forward to helping our children create lifelong memories on the mound and behind the plate of our new diamonds.”

Last year, grant money from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Green Acres fund was used to install new fencing at Memorial Field. The latest renovations were approved by the Borough Council prior to the global health crisis and a contract was awarded to the lowest bidder to perform the work.

“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, construction crews worked around the clock to ensure that renovations to Memorial Park would be complete for recreational activities once restrictions were lifted,” said Council President Rafael Marte, Chairman of the DPW and Parks Committee. “Our children and organized sports programs have already begun utilizing the new diamonds and we are confident the investment we’ve made in these facilities will benefit our community for years to come.”
