Bergenfield Will Close Washington Avenue to Vehicular Traffic on Saturday to Expand Outdoor Dining, Retail Options

After a successful launch of the “Bergenfield: Back in Business” campaign, the Borough will again temporarily close Washington Avenue to vehicular traffic on Saturday, July 25, to encourage residents to dine out and support local small businesses. The street closure will be in effect from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. between Main Street and Clinton Avenue.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted small businesses and the hospitality industry particularly hard, and now more than ever they need our continued support to stay afloat,” said Mayor Arvin Amatorio. “Temporarily closing Washington Avenue to vehicular traffic is one way our local government can create new opportunities for local restaurants and retailers to expand their outdoor operations. I encourage all residents who have the means to do so to visit their favorite local business this weekend.”

The Borough first temporarily closed Washington Avenue last month, with hundreds of residents attending the launch of the program. Bergenfield also plans to close the same stretch of street on Saturday, August 29.

Local Wendy’s Owner Donates $5,000 to Bergenfield’s Community Food Bank

The owner of the Wendy’s located on Washington Avenue presented Borough officials with a $5,000 check from the restaurant chain for the Bergenfield Community Food Bank. The donation, which was delivered by Oriole Familia on Thursday afternoon, will continue to serve the increased number of food insecure residents in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“In the wake of the global health crisis, Bergenfield has made it a priority to ensure that no individual goes without food on their table on any given day,” said Mayor Arvin Amatorio. “Our continued success in providing residents with the items they need to feed their families, including fresh produce, has been the direct result of the generosity we’ve seen from the community and local businesses. We are incredibly grateful for Mr. Familia and the entire Wendy’s organization for contributing to our mission and for being there to support our residents throughout this challenging time.”

The food bank is currently operating out Cooper’s Pond and is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Residents who are in need of assistance should contact the Borough Administrator’s Office at 201-387-4055 option 6 for more information about how to register.

Renovations are currently underway to create a permanent food bank in the basement of Borough Hall. The new location is nearing completion and additional information about hours of operations are expected to be made available in the coming week.
